چکیده

Existing memory models and cache consistency protocols assume the memory coherence property which requires that all processors observe the same ordering of write operations to the same location. In this paper, we address the problem of de ning a memory model that does not rely on the memory coherence assumption, and also the problem of designing a cache consistency protocol based on such a memory model. We de ne a new memory consistency model, called Location Consistency (LC), in which the state of a memory location is modeled as a partially ordered multiset (pomset) of write and synchronization operations. We prove that LC is strictly weaker than existing memory models, but is still equivalent to stronger models for parallel programs that have no data races. We also introduce a new multiprocessor cache consistency protocol based on the LC memory model. We prove that this LC protocol obeys the LC memory model. The LC protocol does not need to enforce single write ownership of memory blocks. As a result, the LC protocol is simpler and more scalable than existing snooping and directory-based cache consistency protocols. i

Computer architects are now studying a new generation of chip architectures that may integrate hundreds of processing cores and memory banks on a single chip with novel interconnect technologies. A key challenge lies in the design and development of an efficient on-chip shared memory organization for these future many-core architectures. New approaches need to be developed to address this chall...

An Abstract State Machine Specification and Verification of the Location Consistency Memory Model and Cache Protocol

We use the Abstract State Machine methodology to give formal operational semantics for the Location Consistency memory model and cache protocol. With these formal models, we prove that the cache protocol satisfies the memory model, but in a way that is strictly stronger than necessary, disallowing certain behavior allowed by

Formal Verification of Delayed Consistency Protocols

In a cache-coherent, shared-memory multiprocessor system, data consistency among cached copies can be delayed until synchronization points under relaxed memory consistency models. Some protocols called delayed consistency protocols take advantage of this flexibility to reduce cache miss rates and memory traffic. However, they are very complex and validating their correctness, even at the behavi...

Tardis 2.0: An Optimized Time Traveling Coherence Protocol

Cache coherence scalability is a big challenge in shared memory systems. Traditional protocols do not scale due to the storage and traffic overhead of cache invalidation. Tardis, a recently proposed coherence protocol, removes cache invalidation using logical timestamps and achieves excellent scalability. The original Tardis protocol, however, only supports the Sequential Consistency (SC) memor...

Proving sequential consistency by model checking

Sequential consistency is a multiprocessor memory model of both practical and theoretical importance. Unfortunately, the general problem of verifying that a finitestate protocol implements sequential consistency is undecidable, and in practice, validating that a real-world, finitestate protocol implements sequential consistency is very time-consuming and costly. In this work, we show that for m...
